Frequently asked
questions.
Everything you need to know about switching, our fee, and what happens after you sign.
How does BuyEnergyOnline.uk make money?
A flat 1p per kWh, added to your unit rate by the supplier and shown as its own line on your contract — before you sign. That's our entire model. We earn the same whichever supplier you choose, so there's no incentive to steer you. No admin fees, no hidden charges, and nothing at all if you don't switch.
Do I need to find my meter reference number?
No. We retrieve your electricity (MPAN) and gas (MPRN) supply data automatically via our ECOES and Xoserve licences. You enter a postcode; we do the rest.
Do I need to upload a bill?
No. Your postcode is enough. You might want a recent bill to hand to check your current unit rate, but it isn't needed to get quotes.
Will I get a cold call?
No. The whole point of BuyEnergyOnline.uk is that you don't have to. You start when it suits you, and we only contact you if your switch genuinely needs your input.
What if I don't know my annual consumption?
We estimate it from your supply data and meter type. You can refine it if you have a more accurate figure.
How long does a switch take?
Typically 4–6 weeks from LOA submission to go-live, depending on your contract end date and whether your current supplier objects. There's no interruption to supply — same meter, just a different company billing you.
Can I switch if I'm still in contract?
Sometimes. Some suppliers allow mid-contract switches with an exit fee; some contracts have a termination clause. We flag the position when you get your quotes.
Is the 1p/kWh fee included in the quoted unit rate?
No — we show it separately so you can see the all-in cost clearly and verify our fee independently.
Are you regulated?
Yes. BuyEnergyOnline.uk is operated by Telnergy Ltd, an Ofgem registered TPI since 2002, enrolled with the Dispute Resolution Ombudsman (ADR Ref: E3561).
What if a supplier bills me incorrectly after I switch?
This is where being operated by a regulated consultancy matters. Telnergy handles billing disputes, back-billing challenges, and Ombudsman escalations routinely. If a supplier bills you wrongly or pursues a charge you don't owe, our dispute process is behind you.
What's a Letter of Authority?
The document you sign to let us act for you in energy procurement — obtaining quotes, submitting your switch, and dealing with suppliers about your supply. It doesn't give us access to your bank account or the power to enter a contract without your explicit approval of a specific tariff.
Is there any obligation?
None. Quotes are free, and there's no commitment until you choose to go ahead.
